Billfish Foundation & Stuart
Here in Stuart, Florida, aboard The Valentine, we recognize and understand the value of our natural resources. There is one organziation, The Billfish Foundation, that does a tremendous job in helping to sustain our precious environment.
In their own words: “The Billfish Foundation (TBF) was founded in 1986 with a mission of conserving billfish worldwide by the late Winthrop P. Rockefeller along with Dr. Eric Prince and a group of fifty founding members. TBF’s keystone program, the traditional tagging program, was begun in 1990. Today, it has grown to be the largest international billfish tagging program in the world.
TBF’s initial focus was on research and educational programs. In 1990, TBF’s focus was expanded to include advocacy for responsible fisheries management, recognizing that influencing decision makers with sound science was a crucial step in successful billfish conservation.”
Just a few ideas that they have championed include the use of circle hooks, implementation of catch and release philosophies, and seriously addressing marine conservation zones. Since we are in the heart of South Florida sailfish waters, this is naturally of great importance to us.
All that said, this is a great time to shake off the post-holiday blues and come on down and fish with us!
